PRE-TRIBULATION RAPTURE STUDIES — PART 1

WHAT IS THE RAPTURE?

1 Thessalonians 4:17
16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

The Greek word “harpazo” for the term “rapture” appears in 1 Thessalonians 4:17, it is translated “caught up.”

17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

The Latin Bible translation of this verse used the word rapturo instead of “caught up”, and thereby is how the term “rapture” came.

Harpazo means to snatch or take away. Other places it is used to describe how the Spirit “caught up” Philip near Gaza and brought him to Caesarea (Acts 8:39)
And to describe Paul’s experience of being caught up into the third heaven (2 Cor 12:2-4).

With these Scriptures alone there can be no doubt that the “harpazo” word is used to indicate the actual removal of God’s people from earth to heaven.

BELIEFS OF THE TIMING FOR RAPTURE

1. Pre-tribulation – All Christians are caught up before the seven years

2. Partial Rapture – Pre-tribulation but overcomers are taken and carnal remain

3. Mid-tribulation – All Christians are caught up in the middle of 7 year tribulation

4. Pre-wrath – All Christians caught up about ¾ into the tribulation

5. Post-tribulation – All Christians caught up at the end of seven years
Who are the ones left behind?

1 Thessolonians 4:13

13 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

The 7 year tribulation is the wrath of the Lamb and the wrath of God.

Revelation 6:15-16

15 And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, 16 and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!
Revelation 16:1

1 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple telling the seven angels, “Go and pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.”

New Testament Promises “Delivered From Wrath”

Luke 21:36

36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”
Revelation 3:10

“Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.

The 7 year tribulation is not meant for the Bride of Christ (Church) – its purpose is for God to deal with the sins of Israel.
Furthermore there is no mention of the “Church” during the tribulation from Revelation chapters 4 through 19. In the first three chapters of Revelation Jesus is dealing with the Church to repent.

The word “Church” in the New Testament is translated from the Greek word “Ekklesia” and it means to be “called out”. The Church has been “called out” and will be off the earth to meet with Jesus for the wedding in Heaven during the 7 year tribulation on the earth.

The Rapture Before The 7 Year Tribulation Is The Promised Rest For Those In Jesus

Hebrews 4:8-9
8 For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. 9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.

THE CHILDREN OF YAHWEH ESCAPE JUDGMENT

26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; 29 but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all.

WHO ARE THE ONES TAKEN?

35 Two women will be grinding together: the one will be taken and the other left. 36 Two men will be in the field: the one will be taken and the other left.”

The English word “taken” is translated from the Greek word “paralambano”. Here it is used as a verb that has the meaning to protect by receiving or taking up and not to destroy.

Finding Comfort In Jesus Returning For The Church

John 14:1-4 (NKJV)

1 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

Here the English word “receive” is translated from the same Greek word “paralambano”. It is very clear Jesus is referring to “taking and receiving” His Church from the earth.

WHO ARE THE ONES LEFT?

Luke 17:35-36
35 Two women will be grinding together: the one will be taken and the other left. 36 Two men will be in the field: the one will be taken and the other left.”

The English word “left” is translated from the Greek word “aphiemie”. Here it is used as a verb that has the meaning to leave behind and is even used in other places in Scripture with the sense of “to abandon, leave destitute, let go, or to send away as in a husband divorcing his wife”.

ISAIAH PROPHESIED OF THE RAPTURE

Isaiah 26:19-21 (NKJV)
19 Your dead shall live; Together with My dead body they shall arise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust; For your dew is like the dew of herbs, And the earth shall cast out the dead.

ISAIAH PROPHESIED OF TAKING REFUGE IN GOD FROM THE COMING JUDGMENT

20 Come, My people, enter your chambers, And shut your doors behind you; Hide yourself, as it were, for a little moment, until the indignation is past. 21 For behold, the Lord comes out of His place To punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity; The earth will also disclose her blood, And will no more cover her slain.

New Testament Promises “Delivered From Wrath”

1 Thessalonians 1:10
10 and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.
The wrath of the Lamb & God will come during the 7 year tribulation.
Romans 5:9
9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

Who Is The Wrath Appointed For?

God’s Wrath on His Enemies

Nahum 1:2

2 God is jealous, and the Lord avenges; The Lord avenges and is furious. The Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves wrath for His enemies;

God’s Wrath on Unrighteousness

Romans 1:18

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

THOSE LIVING FOR JESUS AND EXPECTING HIS RETURN ARE TOLD TO BE READY AND COUNTED WORTHY TO “ESCAPE”

Luke 21:36

36 “Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Jesus Promises To Keep Those Who Have Kept His Word From The Hour Of Trial

Revelation 3:10

10 Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.

**He did not say “keep you through” the hour of trial but “from”**

DANGEROUS MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THE RAPTURE

1. Everyone who says they are saved will go in the rapture.

a. Only those who watch and pray (Luke 21:36)

36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

b. Only those who look for Him (Hebrews 9:28)

28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

c. Study parables of unprofitable servant (Matthew 25:30)

30 And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. d. Study the parable of the ten Virgins (Matthew 25)

2. Backsliders will have time to repent when they hear the shout.

a. Not all people can discern the voice of God (John 12:29)

29 Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”
b. Only they that “have an ear” will hear (Revelation 2:7)

7 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.”’
3. The rapture could happen way down the road – 1,000 years or so.

a. Heed the warning about scoffing at the promise (2 Peter 3:3)

3 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts,

b. Warning about not discerning the signs (Luke 12:56)

56 Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it you do not discern this time?

c. Warning about servants delaying His coming (Matthew 24:48-50)

48 But if that evil servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, 50 the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him and at an hour that he is not aware of,

Pre-Tribulation Is The Only Viewpoint That Truly Encourages Being Ready At Any Time For Jesus To Come

Both the mid-tribulation and post tribulation rapture views would allow a person to calculate the day of Jesus returning just by using Daniel 12:11-12 as a reference point of how many days are left in the tribulation.

Jesus said: “No man knows the day nor the hour”

Matthew 24:36

36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.”

NOTE: Study the Jewish wedding to see how it parallels and agrees with a pre-tribulation rapture of the Church.

  • Thank you for sharing your beautiful study with us.

I want to make a note that the Greek language is very rich in meanings and goes in many ways in depth, to describe in precision something that you can’t find the equivalent word in other languages.
    Here I want to share:
Harpazo : is to snatch and has a touch of something that happens suddenly, unexpectedly and quick.

Apheimie: the verb has many meanings depending on what we refer. One of those is : I loosen my grip and by doing so I stop holding someone…allowing to move freely.

Paralamvano: the deeper meaning of the word is: someone who has the legal right (because paid) or someone who’s being authorized, comes closer, with a purpose to receive something specific which belongs to him or to the one who has authorized him.
Thanks a lot for everything you offer us.
Amazing blessings are always on your way.
